What to Pack to Stay Healthy
A vacation can be sidelined if you suddenly feel sick or have an accident. Here's how to pack to minimize your risk of medical mayhem.
I’ve always been a “what-if” person, always striving to be prepared for any eventuality, no matter how obscure it might be. And as I get older, that habit becomes more ingrained. (I know, I know, you’re supposed to learn to let go of “stuff,” both of the metaphorical and physical, the real and imagined. But some things are harder than others.)
I’ve given up on this one, which is why I always pack a hefty travel first-aid kit, for those “just-in-case” moments. (And now you will understand why fitting my travel essentials into just a carry-on-only bag is next to impossible for moi.)
Of course, the one thing you think will happen rarely does. No, I did not suffer any severe allergic reactions that time I packed both Benadryl and Zyrtec, but instead needed aloe gel, which of course I didn’t pack, to soothe the sunburn I got when the winter temperatures unexpectedly climbed to a summer-like swelter one year while visiting Italy in March. Lesson learned: It’s the thing you are totally unprepared for that ends up taking a swipe at you.
And although many places have pharmacies, I feel more comfortable bringing my own supply, since you can’t always be sure - especially in foreign countries - that the strength, dose and ingredients are created equal. Often they’re not.
Before you go, check in with your doctor. Depending on where you’re traveling, they may suggest certain vaccinations or medications, or even pre-travel recommendations to minimize health risks.
Here’s some really helpful info from the CDC about the pre-travel medical consultation. (It’s meant for healthcare providers, but I think it’s good for everyone to know about.)
Also, check in with your health insurance company. Your medical insurance coverage may not be accepted where you are headed. For instance, Medicare and Medicaid are not accepted out of the United States.
What to pack
First of all, experts advise packing your meds in their original containers, and bringing more than you need (travel delays…sound familiar??). You run the risk of spoilage and/or forgetting the instructions if you transfer your meds into another container. Additionally, some countries, when you pass through customs, may require proof that the sleeping pill or antidepressant you’re taking is a legitimate prescription.
It’s wise to carry your meds in your carry-on luggage in case your luggage gets lost or delayed .
Also make sure to make two copies of a list of your prescriptions (see above). Keep one copy with you and one in the hotel safe. If you have an EpiPen or other injectable with you, a note from your doctor would be wise.
Headaches, upset stomachs, aches and pains, and more
These happen in the most inconvenient places.
That’s why it’s important to have these on hand. (I know I know; we’re all trying to minimize our packing. But being prepared can help spare you the aggravation of - what - not being prepared! And probably a whole lot of other things too unlikely - but possible - to list):
Ibuprofen
Acetaminophen
Antacids
Motion sickness medication
Hydrocortisone ointment
Antibiotic ointment
Artificial tears
Adhesive bandages (in assorted sizes)
Sunscreen (SPF of at least 30)
Sunburn relief
Fiber supplements
Stool softener or laxatives
Anti-diarrheal medication
Insect repellant (containing DEET)
Hand sanitizer
Allergy or cold medicine
Cough drops or suppressant
Sunburn relief

And at the risk of sounding obvious, don’t forget your toothpaste, toothbrush and floss. Oh, and I like to bring my own showercap because 1. My head is always too large for the ones they give you in the room and 2. Mine is prettier.
We’re almost done - I promise. A portable phone charger, an extra pair of prescription glasses, an eyemask, ear plugs and copy of your health insurance information should make the list, too!
